What is the UV Sterilization Chamber?

UV lamp

We all know that UV rays, or the ultraviolet light spectrum, can be very harmful to our skin and eyes.

But everything has its opposite, and in fact UV rays play a fundamental role in our health thanks to their sterilizing properties.

The UV sterilization chamber is the most widely used instrument for this purpose and has been used for over a century to ensure hygiene in the medical and healthcare fields.

Let's find out together.

History of the UV Sterilization Chamber

The discovery of sterilization itself dates back to the nineteenth century and we have addressed it here, talking about other possible methods experimented with in those years.

As for sterilization using UV rays, however, we owe the discovery to the English biologist Arthur Downes and the German chemist Thomas P. Blunt , who developed it in 1878.

The technology was refined over the decades, and the first UV sterilization chambers became widespread in the 1920s.

Since then, UV sterilization chambers have been progressively improved but the principle has remained the same and they are still among the most widely used sterilization tools today.

What is a UV Sterilization Chamber used for?

As we have anticipated, the Sterilization Chamber finds its main use in the medical and healthcare fields.

Sterilization chambers are therefore essential in all environments wherehygiene is fundamental: that is, hospitals, laboratories, dental practices and also beauty salons.

Their main task is to sterilize work tools - whether medical or aesthetic - that come into direct contact with the human body.

But what are the principles the UV sterilization chamber?

How does a UV Sterilization Chamber work?

The UV sterilization chamber makes use of the particular properties of UV rays, that is, that part of the light spectrum (visible and non-visible) defined as ultraviolet.

This light has enough energy to destroy the DNA of microorganisms and pathogens that can be found on work tools that come into direct contact with the human body.

There are various models of UV sterilization chambers, varying in size and power. The layout of the lighting system within the chamber is crucial, as it will determine the quality and efficiency of the sterilization process.

In the sterilization process, the instruments to be sterilized are first conditioned and then placed inside the chamber for a variable period of time depending on the power of the medium and the sterilization needs.

These procedures are, however, outlined in international standards.

International Standards for UV Sterilization

UV sterilization procedures in sterilization chambers are regulated by a series of internationally recognized standards, all issued by ISO, the most important international standards body.

The main standards to follow for UV sterilization in the medical field are ISO 11137, ISO 17665 and ISO 11135.

The FDM Climate Chamber for UV Sterilization

are Climatic chambers the ideal tool for the tests we have discussed, being able to perform both the conditioning process and the actual sterilization.

FDM climatic chambers can be equipped with a UV lighting system capable of efficiently and rapidly sterilizing all medical, healthcare and aesthetic work tools.

Frequently Asked Questions about the UV Sterilization Chamber

What UV wavelength is germicidal?

The UV-C band (200-280 nm) is the most germicidal, peaking at 254 nm (low-pressure mercury lamps) and damaging microbial DNA/RNA, rendering them incapable of replicating. The far UV-C (222 nm, excimer KrCl lamps) inactivates pathogens without penetrating human skin/eyes—used for continuous disinfection in occupied spaces. UV-A and UV-B have minimal to no germicidal effect.

What dose of UV-C is needed to inactivate viruses and bacteria?

Typical doses expressed in mJ/cm² (millijoules per cm²): E. coli 6-10 mJ/cm² (log 3 reduction); Staphylococcus aureus 5-7 mJ/cm²; Bacillus subtilis spores 60-80 mJ/cm²; SARS-CoV-2 3-7 mJ/cm²; Norovirus 20-30 mJ/cm². Dose = irradiance (mW/cm²) × time (s). For air HVAC UV-C typical 0.5-2 mW/cm² with breakthrough time 0.25-1 s.

Is it safe to use UV-C around people?

No for UV-C 254 nm: it causes skin erythema and ocular photokeratitis after a few seconds of exposure. Requires empty spaces or shielded systems (upper-air disinfection). UV-C far 222 nm is being validated as "skin-safe" (does not penetrate the stratum corneum) according to ACGIH TLV revised 2022 (up to 479 mJ/cm²/8h). In this case too, case-by-case confirmation of the lamp + filter system is required.

What industrial applications require UV sterilization chambers?

Medical: surface sterilization of instruments, masks, PPE (EN 14885). Aseptic packaging: LDPE film for pharmaceuticals and foods (FDA 21 CFR 179.39). Drinking water treatment: EN 14204 and USEPA 40 CFR 141. HVAC: coils and ducts (ASHRAE 62.1 + ASHRAE 185.2). Laboratories: disinfection of BSC Class II biosafety cabinets (NSF/ANSI 49). FDM creates custom UV-C chambers for germicidal efficacy qualification according to ISO 15858.
