What Are ISO Standards

The world of product and materials testing as we know it today could not even be conceived without the existence of a series of international organizations that regulate these tests and guarantee their effectiveness.

For battery and accumulator testing, discover our battery testing chambers, designed for testing under controlled conditions.

ISO Standards, issued by ISO, the International Organization for Standardization, are used very often when discussing product and material testing because ISO is the most prestigious and influential of these organizations.

In the following article we will tell the history of standardization, of ISO and the importance of ISO Standards for the current context.

History of Standardization

ISO standards are just one of the most recent chapters in a much longer story. Standardization involves identifying unambiguous and shared measures, practices, and procedures that enable trade and cooperation between individuals and producers.

A story with millennia-old roots but which underwent a qualitative and quantitative change following the industrial revolution and mass production.

In that context, also marked by international cooperation, the first shared units of measurement regulated by internationally recognized bodies were born.

The most famous and evocative episode is the creation of the metre by the Bureau international des poids et mesures (BIPM) which, in 1889, redefined the metre as the distance between two lines engraved on a standard bar of platinum-iridium kept in Sèvres near Paris.

At the same time, international standards organizations were also born. The first was the IEC, the International Electrotechnical Commission, founded in 1906 and still in existence today. A few decades later, in 1926, the ISA, the predecessor of our ISO, was also founded.

History of ISO

ISO was founded in Geneva in 1947 , a product of the renewed climate of international cooperation that followed World War II. Delegates from 25 different countries , and ISO quickly established itself as the most prestigious and recognized international regulatory body.

A turning point in the history of ISO came in 1987 when the first standard on quality management, the macro-norm ISO 9000.

ISO becomes a quality certification for companies in various aspects: business management, marketing, human resources, customer management and, of course, production.

This is where product and material testing comes into play.

ISO Standards for Product and Material Testing

With the exception of electrical and electronic engineering, which are the responsibility of the IEC, ISO is responsible for standardizing all product and material testing.

The many ISO Standards (today there are over twenty thousand) outline the testing procedures for products and materials in many fields, such as construction, manufacturing, automotive, healthcare products and so on.

ISO standards prescribe various types of tests to ensure the safety and reliability of products and materials. Among these, plays environmental testing. a key role

Climatic Chamber for Tests According to ISO Standards

The climatic chamber is the primary instrument for performing environmental tests on products and materials. Within each climatic chamber, various environmental parameters, such as temperature and relative humidity, can be altered to determine how a sample of a material or product being tested behaves.

Environmental testing procedures are outlined in various ISO standards that are specific to the industry and materials involved.

FDM Environmental Chambers can perform all environmental tests outlined in ISO standards with precision and reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions about ISO Standards

What is the difference between ISO, EN ISO and UNI EN ISO?

All three indicate the same standard, but with different levels of adoption. ISO is published by the international organization in Geneva. EN ISO is the European version ratified by CEN—technically identical but with the status of a binding European standard in the EU. UNI EN ISO is the Italian implementation by UNI—the text is in Italian with any national prefaces. For technical application, the content is identical.

Which ISOs are most relevant for climate testing?

Key standards: ISO 16750 (automotive electronics), ISO 9227 (salt spray corrosion), ISO 4892 (laboratory light exposure), ISO 105-B02/E04 (color fastness of textiles), ISO 12944 (paints and varnishes), ISO 16000 (indoor air quality), ISO 11607 (medical packaging), ISO 14644 (cleanchambers), ISO 12219 (automotive air emissions). Many of these have been adopted as mandatory EN ISO standards in the EU.

How do you get ISO certification?

The process: (1) internal gap analysis, (2) implementation of a compliant quality system, (3) internal audit, (4) certification audit by an accredited third-party body (in Italy accredited by ACCREDIA, e.g. Bureau Veritas, DNV, TÜV, CSQ), (5) issuing a three-yearly certificate with annual surveillance. The most requested certifications: ISO 9001 (quality), ISO 14001 (environment), ISO 45001 (safety), ISO 13485 (medical device), ISO/IEC 17025 (testing laboratories).

Are ISO standards mandatory?

Not in itself : ISO is a voluntary organization. They become mandatory when: (a) incorporated into EU directives/regulations (e.g. EN ISO 13485 for medical devices); (b) referred to in commercial contracts (client requests a certified supplier); (c) referred to in national laws . ISO 9001 certification, although voluntary, is de facto mandatory for any medium-large scale industrial supplier.
