Our guide to choosing the climate chamber best suited to your needs.

In the world of product and material testing, a fundamental role is played by internationally recognized organizations that produce standards and related certifications.
Among the best known and most used are the ASTM Standards.
But what are ASTM standards? And why are they important?
The following article will take a detailed look at what ASTM Standards are.
The history of ASTM Standards dates back to the late nineteenth century, when a group of engineers and scientists led by Charles Benjamin Dudley, then head of quality control for the Pennsylvania Railroad, became aware of the increasingly frequent railway accidents related to the fragility of the tracks and proposed introducing precise quality standards that manufacturers would have to respect.
Thus, in 1902, the American Society for Testing and Materials, which changed its name in the 1960s, leaving only the acronym.

So, what are ASTM Standards today?
ASTM Standards today are technical specifications that establish criteria for the design, production, and evaluation of products and services. They provide clear and uniform guidelines to ensure consistency and regulatory compliance in industries worldwide.
Almost all industries have to deal with ASTM Standards in one way or another.
Among those most affected by the ASTM guidelines we can include:
ASTM Standards outline a wide variety of tests that products and materials must pass to be considered safe and efficient. Many are physical, others chemical, and still others mechanical. A key role, however, is played by climatic tests that apply to virtually every product or material.
Climatic tests simulate the effects of the environment on products and materials, both under normal and extreme conditions. Here, for example, we discussed accelerated aging testing in a climatic chamber, citing seven ASTM standards.

ASTM standards are organized into over 140 technical committees, each dedicated to a specific field. Here are the most relevant for climate and environmental testing:
| Standard | Description | Sector |
|---|---|---|
| ASTM D4587 | Fluorescent UV exposure on paints and coatings | Materials / Coatings |
| ASTM G154 | Exposure to fluorescent UV lamps for non-metallic materials | Plastics / Polymers |
| ASTM G155 | Exposure to xenon arc lamps | Plastics / Fabrics |
| ASTM B117 | Salt spray test | Metals / Corrosion |
| ASTM D1735 | Water spray test on coatings | Construction / Cladding |
| ASTM E595 | Outgassing testing for aerospace materials | Aerospace |
| ASTM D4459 | Sunlight exposure for plastics intended for indoor use | Plastics |
A common question is: when should ASTM standards be used and when should ISO standards be used? The choice depends primarily on the target market and regulatory requirements:
It's important to note that ASTM and ISO often cover the same tests with similar methodologies. For example, for UV testing of plastics, both ASTM G154 and ISO 4892 require the use of fluorescent UV lamps with comparable parameters.
Each ASTM standard follows a precise numbering system:
ASTM stands for American Society for Testing and Materials. Today, the organization officially uses the name ASTM International to reflect its global role in standardization.
Yes, ASTM standards are recognized and used worldwide, although in Europe, EN and ISO standards generally take regulatory precedence. Many European companies exporting to the US are still required to comply with ASTM standards.
The main difference isgeographic origin and scope: ASTM was born as an American standard (later international), while ISO was born as an international organization. Both produce high-quality standards, and equivalent or harmonized standards exist in many sectors.
Most ASTM climate tests require a climate chamber capable of precisely controlling temperature, relative humidity, and, in some cases, UV radiation. FDM climate chambers are designed to meet all these requirements.
Our climatic chambers are designed to perform all the most common climatic tests, in compliance with ASTM standards and other international organizations that regulate product and material testing on a global scale.
