The Thermo-Vacuum Chamber: What It Is and How It Works

pexels-mikhail-nilov-7671972

The broad family of climatic chambers includes all laboratory instruments that reproduce specific atmospheric conditions in an isolated and controlled environment.

For battery and storage testing, discover the FDM battery test chamber, designed for testing under controlled conditions.

The most common and widespread are climatic chambers for temperature and humidity testing, environmental chambers and growth chambers which are suitable for a wide range of uses.

But there are also very specific chambers that are essential for certain sectors: this is the case of the thermal vacuum chamber, also known by the acronym TVAC.

What is the TVAC Thermal Vacuum Chamber?

The TVAC, or Thermal Vacuum Chamber , is a generally large climatic chamber that can perform thermal vacuum testing on materials and people. The TVAC is characterized by its ability to reach extreme temperature ranges from -180°C to +150°C and its ability to reproduce equally extreme environments in terms of pressure, environments known precisely as "high vacuums."

Some vacuum chambers are also equipped with a xenon arc lamp system to reproducesolar radiation.

What is the TVAC Thermal Vacuum Chamber Used For?

The thermal vacuum chamber is mainly used in the aerospace.

The most advanced thermo-vacuum chambers are in fact in the possession of NASA , which has nine of them, each with its own technical specifications and uses.

Thermal vacuum chambers are used to simulate the different extraterrestrial environments that materials, machines, and astronauts will face. NASA's largest thermal vacuum chamber, Chamber A, is so large that it can be used to test entire spacecraft, such as satellites. Smaller chambers, such as Chamber B, are used by astronauts for various types of onboard simulations.

the smallest thermal vacuum chambersare used to test individual aerospace engineering components such as batteries.

How the TVAC Thermal Vacuum Chamber Works

We've seen that thermal vacuum chambers vary greatly in size and use, making it difficult to precisely describe the operation of a TVAC that fits each device. The constants for each thermal vacuum chamber are the extreme ranges of temperature and atmospheric pressure.

Unlike normal climatic chambers, the extreme temperatures of the thermal vacuum chamber are obtained through the use of thermal fluids, such as liquid and/or gaseous nitrogen, which are made to flow between the external and internal body of the machine.

The vacuum generation system consists of a set of vacuum pumps that can reach values of around 10-2 mbar and then touch extremes such as 1×10-6.

International Standards on Thermal Vacuum Testing

There are two bodies that regulate the specifications of thermal vacuum chambers and the resulting tests.

The first is NASA itself which promulgates the NASA Technical Standards System, commonly abbreviated to NTSS, the oldest international space standardization system.

In 1993 , on the other side of the ocean, the European Cooperation for Space Standardization was born .

The ECSS establishes safety and sustainability standards for all European Union countries in the aerospace industry. Guidelines for thermal vacuum testing can be found here.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Thermal Vacuum Chamber

What is the difference between a thermovacuum chamber and an altitude chamber?

The altitude chamber simulates pressures up to 50 mbar (equivalent to ~20,000 m), used for testing avionics and aerospace components. The thermal-vacuum chamber operates at much lower pressures (10⁻⁶ mbar or lower), equivalent to orbital space, and combines vacuum with extreme thermal cycling (-196°C with liquid nitrogen / +150°C with heating panels).

What vacuum levels are reached?

Typical thermal vacuum chambers reach 10⁻⁶ ÷ 10⁻⁸ mbar (high vacuum) through a combined system: primary rotary pump + turbomolecular pump + possibly cryogenic pump. For scientific applications or satellites in GEO orbit, 10⁻⁹ mbar (ultra-high vacuum). The pump-down time from atmospheric pressure to 10⁻⁶ mbar is typically 4-12 hours.

Which space regulations require thermo-vacuum testing?

The main ones are ECSS-E-ST-10-03 (European) and NASA-STD-7001/7002 (USA). Typical protocols: thermal balance test (thermal balance verification), thermal vacuum cycling (8-16 cycles at -50/+80°C in vacuum), outgassing test (ASTM E595 to evaluate contaminant release). All mandatory for flight hardware qualification.

Is it possible to simulate solar radiation in a vacuum chamber?

Yes, in Large Space Simulators. These integrate high-power xenon lamp sources with optical collimation to reproduce theAir Mass Zero (AM0) solar spectrum up to 1,370 W/m² (solar constant). They are primarily used for testing complete satellite payloads. FDM creates custom solar simulation configurations on request.
